WHAT IS WORTHY WORSHIP?

Worshipping God is an important part of every Christian's life.

John 4:23 states, "But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him." Today, there is a lot of confusion and misunderstanding as to what constitutes proper worship of God.

First, proper worship is directed toward God alone.

As we come to worship, it is to be focused and directed toward God. Worship means to adore, to reverence. Revelation 4:10-11 gives us a beautiful picture of worship because "Thou are worthy, O Lord to receive glory and honor and power ..." Many times we come for the purpose of having our needs met, or expecting to be lifted spiritually, or to be entertained; however true worship is not to be focused on ourselves, but directed toward Him.

Second, proper worship requires a right spirit.

The spirit referred to in John 4:23 is a reference to man's spirit. The point being made is that we must "be in tune with God." Of course trusting in Christ as one's personal Savior is a prerequisite (see An Important Message). Also, we must be prepared spiritually beforehand which means we must have sin confessed: sin breaks any fellowship, thus any worship is worthless. Proper worship includes humility, praise, thanksgiving, and a willingness to obey His Word.

Third, proper worship is based on absolute truth.

Matthew 15:9 says that vain worship occurs when teaching does not agree with the truth of God's Word. In the John 4 passage, Christ addresses the fact that they do not know what they are worshiping even though they believe that there is only one true God. It is imperative that all that is said and done be in agreement with Scripture.

When you come before the Lord to worship, I hope that you will incorporate these principles into your life. I believe that it will change your walk with Christ in ways that you never have imagined. God Bless.
